Demystifying Death Week 2024

Taking place across Scotland from 6-12 May, Demystifying Death Week is about shining a light on death, dying and bereavement in Scotland. We are encouraging people to get involved by holding in-person and online events that bring death, dying and bereavement into the limelight.

Below is a list of events registered so far - these pages will be updated over the coming weeks. If you are organising an event that you'd like us to feature, please get in touch.

“What about direct cremation?” An online discussion

Organised by members of the team at the University of Aberdeen who developed the Care in Funerals Casebook

Thursday 9th May, 12.30-1.30pm.

Online via Zoom.

This event is open to the public. Please register in advance.

Many funeral companies now offer direct cremation – meaning cremation without a ceremony or service that mourners attend. The pros and cons of direct cremation can look quite different to people who think about funerals from different perspectives. This online event, which will start with a short story about a direct cremation, is an opportunity to consider your own views in conversation with others.

The discussion is hosted by members of the team that developed the Care in Funerals Casebook – a free online resource of short stories that illustrate some of the practical and ethical concerns that can arise in funeral provision.

To register and obtain the meeting link, please email CareInFunerals@abdn.ac.uk.

Deathcare in the Queer Community

Organised by NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde.

Wednesday 8th May 2024, 6.30pm-7.30pm

Taking place online (MS Teams)

This event is open to the public. Everyone is welcome.

Whether it is planning a funeral, or ensuring that people know your wishes and preferences when it comes to end of life care, having people and tools to help your feel empowered is vital. For members of the Queer community there can be added anxiety about some of these aspects such as what happens with legal paperwork, and how to ensure that the people you want to be involved in care and planning can be.

This panel discussion will help to answer some of these questions and provide a space to discuss important topics including how we can create inclusive services which embrace and celebrate people's identities.

During this session we will discuss some of the common feelings that people may experience and highlight different places where support is available. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions to our panel of experts who have backgrounds in various parts of this field.
