We want Scotland to be a place where:

  • People have the knowledge, skills and information they need to deal with the practical, legal, medical, financial, emotional and spiritual issues associated with death, dying and bereavement.

  • People have opportunities to talk about and plan ahead for ill health and death.

  • People have opportunities to offer and receive support relating to ill health, death, dying and bereavement as part of supportive communities.

  • Policy makers and service providers address the range of factors outwith formal health and social care services that affect people’s experiences of death, dying, loss and care

  • Public policies acknowledge and make provision for the needs of people who are caring, dying or grieving

  • Health and social care services understand that they can help individuals and families by supporting future care planning, listening to people’s needs and empowering people with realistic, practical information.
