Demystifying Death Week 2023

Taking place across Scotland from 1-7 May, Demystifying Death Week is about shining a light on death, dying and bereavement in Scotland. We are encouraging people to get involved by holding in-person and online events that bring death, dying and bereavement into the limelight.

Below is a list of events registered so far - these pages will be updated over the coming weeks. If you are organising an event that you'd like us to feature, please get in touch.

Pollokshaws Death Cafe

Organised by Pollokshaws Methodist Church

This event is open to the public.

A link to the spiritual, melding the stark reality of death with a fresh understanding of the spirituality. Now connected with Pushing Up The Daisies, the caring charity looking after those from their last breath to the day of burial or cremation.

Catherine Simpson at Pollok Library

This event is open to the public.

Join us at Pollok Library from 11am – 2pm on Friday 5th May for Demystifying Death Week.

Glasgow Libraries are holding this free special event to give you the knowledge, skills and opportunities to plan and support each other through death, dying, loss and care.

We will be hearing from memoir-writer, novelist, poet and short-story writer Catherine Simpson. Catherine will be talking about her novels When I Had a Little Sister and One Body and experiences of suicide, death and bereavement.

Glasgow Libraries, Prince and Princess Wales Hospice, Life Link, Richmond’s Hope, Citizens Advice and The Alliance will be providing on the spot support and information around death.

You can also receive support and find out more with Macmillan @ Glasgow Libraries at their drop in chatty café.

Tour a Crematorium - Hurlet Crematorium

The Hurlet Crematorium is opening its doors to the public to come and visit us and have a tour of Scotland's Best Crematorium 2022.

Every part of the building will be accessible including our state-of-the-art Cremator room.

Set within 15 acres of open countryside, The Hurlet is within easy reach of the whole of East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire, and Glasgow South.

No One Grieves Alone - Event Series

Organised by Inverclyde Cares and Inverclyde Culture Collective

No One Grieves Alone is a space to come together to creatively explore themes of death, grief and loss happening at the Beacon Arts Centre, Greenock on Wednesday 3rd May 10:00am-2:00pm as part of a collaboration between Inverclyde Culture Collective and Inverclyde Cares.

This event is about finding new ways to talk about and explore the complexities of grief, death and loss. Through doing so considering questions around how we may collectively grieve, how young people may encounter death differently and how creative practice may be used as a way respond to loss in a variety of forms throughout people’s lives.

No One Grieves Alone will bring together researchers, artists, creative practitioners, chaplains and health and social care professionals to allow a broad range of perspectives and positions on Death, Grief and Loss to be discussed. The event will also feature new work by artists Laura Bradshaw and Steven Anderson with a culmination of their Inverclyde Culture Collective supported residency “No One Grieves Alone” where they have been exploring ideas of inheritances, lineage and ways we respond in the present to what was left to us.

Preparing For Hospital – What you need to know

Organised by NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde.

Wednesday 3rd May 2023, 10.30am-11.30am. Taking place online (MS Teams).

This event is open to the public.

What will we be talking about?

No one wants to go into hospital, but sometimes it is unavoidable. However there are some simple things we can do now, to try and make the experience less stressful for everyone.

Come along to learn about making “grab bags”, what paperwork to bring along and what the discharge process might look like. This event might be particularly useful for anyone supporting someone else and worried about what the future might look like.
