Demystifying Death Week 2023
Taking place across Scotland from 1-7 May, Demystifying Death Week is about shining a light on death, dying and bereavement in Scotland. We are encouraging people to get involved by holding in-person and online events that bring death, dying and bereavement into the limelight.
Below is a list of events registered so far - these pages will be updated over the coming weeks. If you are organising an event that you'd like us to feature, please get in touch.
Film Screening of "Cicely & David" at Queen Margaret University
Organised by Queen Margaret University.
Thursday 4th May 2023 at 2pm.
Halle Lecture Theatre, Queen Margaret University, Queen Margaret Drive, East Lothian EH21 6UD
This event is open to the public.
Please join us for a screening of the filmed play "Cicely & David" written by David Clark, Emeritus Professor, University of Glasgow. The play tells the story of how Cicely Saunders came to establish the first modern hospice.
David Tasma, a Polish immigrant to London, was dying from cancer far from home and family. His social worker, Cicely Saunders, knew him only briefly but they formed a close bond, and she helped him find meaning in his life. Her experiences with David led her to found the first modern hospice in 1967, becoming a beacon for end of life care improvement around the world.
Following the screening there will be time for discussion questions and answers facilitated by producer Dr Jo Hockley OBE.
To reserve your place, please email ABacigalupo@qmu.ac.uk no later than 28th April 2023.
Any Last Words?
In partnership with NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Battlefield Community Project and Finns Place.
Sunday 14th May 2023, 2.00pm-4.00pm.
Taking place at Finn’s Place, 167 Ledard Rd, Glasgow G42 9QU.
This event is open to the public.
What will we be talking about?
How do you want to be remembered? What are the stories you want people to tell (or not tell!) about you? What is the soundtrack of your life? Funeral planning doesn’t need to be doom and gloom, especially if you can have your say when you’re still alive!
These days more and more people are creating occasions which are as unique as the person they commemorate, however it always helps in you have at least some idea of what that person would have wanted. So come to a fun workshop which will help us all to think about some of the little (and big!) things we might want for our own send off.
This event is in partnership with Battlefield Community Project, Finn’s Place.
Who is this event for?
Everyone is welcome.
When and where is it happening?
2.00pm-4.00pm, Finns Place, 167 Ledard Rd, Glasgow G42 9QU. This is in the Southside of Glasgow near the New Victoria Hospital.

Flower Power – remembering those we miss
In partnership with NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Battlefield Community Project, Finns Place.
Saturday 13th May 2023, 10.00am-12.00pm.
Taking place at Battlefield Community Garden, corner of Arundel Drive and Ledard Road, Battlefield, Glasgow, G42 9RE
This event is open to the public.
What will we be doing?
Come along to our FREE seed-bomb workshop in the Southside of Glasgow!
Nature gives us a great opportunity to reflect and remember, especially when we can see seasons change and plants die, only to spring up again as the days grow longer and the sun comes out.
Using forget-me-not seeds, we want to make lots of little seed-bombs which people can use in places where they would like to remember their loved ones. This might be a favourite view point, or on a much-loved walk – the possibilities are endless.
Our workshop also gives everyone a chance to come together and share stories and memories of the people we miss, so bring along your mum, dad, gran, grandpa, aunts and uncles – everyone is welcome!
We will be outside so make sure to wear appropriate clothes for whatever the weather may have in store for us!
This event is run in partnership with Battlefield Community Project.
