Demystifying Death Week 2022

Taking place across Scotland from 2-6 May, Demystifying Death Week is about shining a light on death, dying and bereavement in Scotland. We are encouraging people to get involved by holding online events that bring death, dying and bereavement into the limelight.

Below is a list of events registered so far - these pages will be updated over the coming weeks. If you are organising an event, please get in touch.

What is Palliative Care?

Organised by NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. Wednesday 4 May, 4pm.

What will we be talking about?

When you think about palliative care, what is the first thing that comes to mind? “Terminal illness”? “End of life”? “Comfort Care”? Whilst all these things are true, palliative care is so much more than this. It is about improving the quality of life of anyone facing a life-limiting condition and can be beneficial at lots points during someone’s health journey. During this session, we will be busting some myths when it comes to Palliative Care and also exploring the support that the NHSGGC Specialist Palliative Care Team can provide both colleagues and patients.

Who is this event for?

Open to staff across NHSGGC Health and Social Care staff, as well as people working in Care Homes or 3rd Sector.

When and where is it happening?

4.00-5.00pm, Online on MS Teams

Preparing for Hospital – What You Need to Know

Organised by NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. Wednesday 4 May, 1pm.

What will we be talking about?

No one wants to go into hospital, but sometimes it is unavoidable. However there are some simple things we can do now, to try and make the experience less stressful for everyone.

Come along to learn about making “grab bags”, what paperwork to bring along and what the discharge process might look like. This event might be particularly useful for anyone supporting someone else and worried about what the future might look like.

Who is this event for?

Open to everyone but may be particularly useful for unpaid carers.

When and where is it happening?

1.00-2.00pm, Online on MS Teams

Highland Hospice Events

Over the week Highland Hospice are encouraging people to discuss conversations around death and dying that they might otherwise brush aside, and urge companies to consider adopting the Bereavement Charter, which describes a vision for how we can all work together to ensure adults, young people and children who are experiencing bereavement are supported.

Their 'By the River Cafe' and 'In the City Cafe' will be encouraging these open conversations throughout the week, with 'chatterboxes' on the tables to help people intitiate conversations.

They will be running will run a special online session of the Last Aid course on Friday 6th May between 10am and 130pm. Please click here to book on this course.

Finally their 'A Time to Remember' service will be broadcast on Saturday 7th May at 11am. Lead by Chaplain Norma Higgott, this offers the opportunity to reflect on the lives of those no longer with us. The focus of this service will be 'A Bridge Over Troubled Waters', helping those who join to cope with their individual loss and appreciate those who have helped, or are helping them, along the way.

ACP and TEPs

Organised by NHSGGC. Thursday 5th May 2022. 4.00-5.00pm. Event hosted on MS Teams.

How can we help our on-call teams to do the right thing in the middle of the night - when faced with a deteriorating patient that they have never met? Sometimes intervening may be of no benefit or could cause distress but making that judgement can be very difficult. It is possible that there is a plan but accessing it may be a challenge. We will discuss the plans that may be available, how to find them, how to improve them and how to initiate them and have the conversation.

Please note, this is a recording of a session which took place as part of NHSGGC’s Realistic Medicine Week in March 2022.

This event is open to staff across NHSGGC Health and Social Care staff, as well as people working in Care Homes or 3rd Sector.
