good life, good death, good grief

Death Awareness Week 2017

From 8-14 May 2017 people across Scotland did their bit to promote more open and supportive attitudes to death, dying and bereavement by taking part in Death Awareness Week Scotland.

Awareness week blogs

We were pleased to publish a new blog each day, with contributions from a variety of perspectives:

Launch of new Advance Care Planning resource

We worked with NHS Lothian and others to design and launch a mini-advance care planning prompt... in the form of a small origami game. The new resource encourages people to 'plan your own future', and includes prompts and information relating to legal, medical, practical and personal aspects of advance care planning.

It Takes a Village exhibition

Last Awareness Week saw the launch of It Takes a Village, a powerful and challenging series of portraits and personal stories exploring the idea that as people’s health deteriorates, care and support comes in many guises. The exhibition has continued to be popular and has been displayed in various locations over the last year. This Awareness Week, we were pleased to work again with artist Colin Gray to add two more portraits to the series: Joanne, Home Carer, and Nazir, Critical Care Doctor. The new portraits were premiered at the Scottish Care Care Conference on Friday 12th May and are available to view online.

Engaging the Care at Home sector

Scottish Care recently published Trees that Bend in the Wind, a report exploring the experiences of front line support workers delivering palliative and end of life care. Within the report, Scottish Care recommended promotion of a national conversation about dying. Awareness Week provided an excellent opportunity for us to strengthen our links with Scottish Care and its members, and work together on this.

This included highlighting Care at Home issues through some of our blogs, supporting a death cafe by Bluebird Care Edinburgh, and adding Joanne, Home Carer to the It Takes a Village Exhibition. We were also pleased to work with Scottish Care to bring palliative and end of life care issues to the fore of their conference, including a display of the It Takes a Village exhibition, and an information display providing information resources and highlighting good practice from within the sector.

A summary report reflecting on Awareness Week will be published here soon.
