good life, good death, good grief

Demystifying Death Week 2022

Taking place across Scotland from 2-6 May, Demystifying Death Week is about shining a light on death, dying and bereavement in Scotland. We are encouraging people to get involved by holding online events that bring death, dying and bereavement into the limelight.

Below is a list of events registered so far - these pages will be updated over the coming weeks. If you are organising an event, please get in touch.

Death Cafe

Organised by NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. Monday 2 May, 7pm.

What will we be talking about?

Let’s break the taboo, and talk about Death! This event is an informal space to talk with others about something which affects us all…so boil the kettle, raid the biscuit tin and come and join the conversation!

Please note that this is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session.

Who is this event for?

Open to everyone including members of the public and staff.

When and where is it happening?

7.00-8.00pm, Online on MS Teams

Can you really choose to die? A talk by Jane Duncan Rogers and Phyllis Shacter

Organised by the Findhorn Community. 30 April, 7pm-9pm. Online or at the Universal Hall Findhorn.

Live in the Universal Hall Findhorn, will be Jane Duncan Rogers, author of Before I Go: The Essential Guide to Creating A Good End of Life Plan. Jane is founder of social enterprise, Before I Go Solutions, a training organisation providing products and programmes to help others make good end-of-life plans. Streamed in live from Washington State in the US will be Phyllis Shacter, author of Choosing to Die: Elective Death by Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking (VSED) in the Face of Degenerative Disease. She wrote this book after her husband got dementia and decided he no longer wanted to live with it.

Building bereavement confidence in schools

Organised by Child Bereavement UK. Tuesday 3 May 4 pm - 5 pm

In bereavement training, over 75% of education professionals tell us they worry that they will say the wrong thing, or feel they lack confidence when having conversations about death and grief with their pupils. The webinar investigates some of the challenges facing schools when they are managing a bereavement, responding to world events, or answering pupils’ questions. This session will provide information, strategies and resources to empower staff in school to feel more confident when managing bereavement within their school community.
